Tips for keeping your pets away from the Christmas tree

Christmas Cat - Animal Removal Service FloridaWe do admit, as a professional animal removal company serving the Florida East Coast, we don’t get calls for removing animals from Christmas tree… However, everyone here at A+ Animal Solutions loves their pets dearly and would hate to see them get hurt by getting tangled up in the family Christmas tree.

With that in mind, A+ Animal Solutions would like to share some useful tips for helping keep your pets away from the Christmas tree this holiday season.

Christmas trees can be dangerous to pets

As harmless as a they might seem, there are several things associated with the Christmas tree that can be harmful to pets. Mainly in this article we will be addressing cats and dogs as the primary focus but the guidelines can be understood for most any pet. Pets love things that are new, shiny and are accessible… For that reason a Christmas tree can have some lurking dangers such as:

  • Electrical cords that pets might chew on
  • Christmas ornament hangers that are sharp
  • Plastic needles that may be toxic for pets to chew on (especially if treated with the spray snow)
  • For live trees, the water at the base of the tree is particularly attractive and may contain harmful chemicals that are commonly used to preserve the color of a Christmas tree
  • Glass ornaments and lights that fall or are knocked off, can shatter; creating a hazard for your pets and children… and for Santa who might be walking around in his bare feet.

Because of these hazards the best solution is to find a way to keep your pets away from the Christmas tree throughout the holiday season.

However, this may not be possible in many homes; so let’s look at some good ideas to help acclimate your pets to the presence of your Christmas tree.

Get your pets comfortable with the tree

Christmas dogs - Animal Removal Service FloridaA+ Animal Removal knows that pets, especially cats, are naturally curious; and will explore thoroughly anything that is new. Dogs can also be curious, but more to the extent of territory; so if there’s something new in their territory they would be prone to attack it the tree or to mark their territory by urinating on it.

To help get your pets more comfortable with the Christmas tree here are some useful things to understand:

  • Before you decorate, place the tree up for a day or two so they can get used to it being there; maybe even move it around in different locations. When their curiosity is satisfied they will be less likely to want to explore the tree further.
  • Be sure to position the tree away from the common areas that the pets identify as their own, such as: there feeding and sleeping area.
  • When you get around to decorating the tree, let them be a part of the process. Let them smell and recognize everything before you put it on the tree.

NOTE: Especially for cats, don’t play with them during this process. If you hang the tinsel or Garland and let them play with it, they will associate those items with playtime… they will desire to play with them even after they’re on the tree.

  • Keep dangling lights and Christmas ornaments off from the bottom branches. Dangling, shiny things are a natural attraction for pets.
  • As necessary, use a spray bottle and stern voice to train your pets when they get close to the tree.

Because each pet is a little different, different techniques may be necessary to keep from Christmas morning becoming a Christmas disaster. Because our pets are part of the family we want to be able to include them in our happy day, but avoid issues that may come from our curious furry friends. Keep in mind that pets are just doing what comes naturally; they must be trained and nurtured just like one of our kids.
